(13 December 2018) PSI has welcomed the Global Compact for Migration that was discussed at the UN Conference in Marrakesh 10 and 11 December 2018. The compact provides strong arguments to invest in quality public services in both countries of origin and destination. Quality public services support the delivery of social protection. It is imperative to invest in public services, ensuring adequate and well-trained staff delivering them in safe and decent conditions. Public services are the bedrock of solidarity. Public services are human rights. PSI pointed out that differentiating access to services between regular and irregular migrants represents discrimination and a weakness in the GCM that must be overcome (Objective 15). Cooperation between service providers and immigration authorities should include a clear agreement of separation of functions. PSI was active in a number of workshops also supported by EPSU and brought a large delegation to the conference. The Conference asks the UN to adopt the Compact. The trade unions condemn the governments that are pulling out of the Compact often under the influence of extreme right wing parties.
