Homecare workers continue action over pay, working conditions and service quality

ELA, LAB, UGT y USO home care workers Bilbao Basque region

(6 February 2018) Trade unions representing home care workers in the Basque country are planning two further days of industrial action. The workers have been in dispute with the regional home care service since November. The unions say that the quality of service is being undermined because of the poor working conditions being imposed on home care staff.

Companies are winning care contracts without guaranteeing minimum hourly prices while staff face precarious employment conditions, with many lacking a guaranteed minimum number of hours or stuck on temporary contracts, in some cases in breech on the law on fixed-term contracts. Pay has been frozen for five years and the latest pay offer from the employers is below inflation.

The unions are making the case to the city and regional council that a high quality service should be based on quality employment conditions. Following the actions in December and on 25 January, the next partial work stoppages will take place between 10am and 1pm on 12 and 27 February. There will also be a demonstration in Bilbao on 27 February with a march from the city council to the regional council offices.

EPSU has sent a message of support to its affiliates involved in the action – ELA, UGT and USO.
