Call for more paid leave

The GPA-DJP services union is campaigning for more paid leave. It is now 25 years since a legal right to 25 days’ paid leave was established and the union argues it is now time to look at increasing holiday entitlement. With greater pressure at work and later retirement, GPA-DJP says that there are convincing arguments for more holidays. It points out that workers can get extra leave on the basis of long service with the same employer. However, with more precarious employment conditions and more workers changing jobs more often, fewer people will get this extra leave.

Trade unions essential for more paid leave

In a short briefing, Wir Machen Urlaub, WIPO Nr 7/13, ver.di underlines the important role that trade unions have played in winning the right to paid holidays and even better entitlement in collective agreements. Most workers covered by a collective agreement will get 30 days' paid leave compared to 25 where there is no agreement and 20 as guaranteed in law. Workers in mini-jobs may often be denied the legal minimum. This also contrasts with the situation in the US where there is no legal right to any paid holiday. Health union takes up problem of suspending workers or putting them on paid leave

The HWURF health workers' trade union has raised concerns with the government that some health institutions are pressuring healthcare staff to take leave, in some cases, unpaid leave or are suspending workers on partial pay where there is a need for self-isolation or a lack of work where non-urgent care and procedures have been cancelled. The union argues that this is clearly in contravention of the labour code and urges workers who are faced with this situation to raise it with the relevant authorities and report to the labour inspectorate.
