European action week in healthcare and social services: press conference

EPSU Press Conference European Health action week 27 October

(22 October 2020) Press conference -  In the framework of a Global Trade Union day of action for care work on 29th October, the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) is organising a week of actions from 27th – 30th. On Tuesday 27th a Press Conference will be held in Residence Palace to discuss the demands of unions and the urgent need to invest in health and care in Europe (all sanitary measures will be in place to ensure safety).

With the increase of coronavirus infections across Europe, and more and more COVID-19 patients in hospitals and intensive care, health and care staff are under immense pressure. During the Press Conference, there will be a selection of testimonies about the situation across Europe.

Speakers:

Amnesty International’s Head of Economic Justice Steve Cockburn,  will present Amnesty International’s recent report ‘Silenced, Exposed, Attacked’, including dangerous workplaces, occupational benefits, restrictions on freedom of expression, and attacks.

General Secretary of European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) Jan Willem Goudriaan will present the week of action.

Sarah Melsens from the European network against privatization and commercialization of health and social protection will talk about citizen mobilisation in the health sector.

Also, via Skype two representatives of health and social services unions in Romania and Spain, Razvan Gae (SANITAS) and Yolanda Gil (FSS-CCOO), will explain the situation on the ground.

The event will start at 10.30 in the Malbeek room at Residence Palace. In line with current public health regulations, only 18 participants can attend. Please register to the following email : [email protected]

The week of action will culminate on the 29th October with a socially distanced and symbolic mobilisation and photo opportunity for the press outside the European institutions to demand investment in health and care.
