The three main trade union federations are uniting in a national demonstration on 9 May demanding renewal of the collective agreement covering 150,000 workers in the private health sector. A new collective agreement should have come into effect in January 2006 and the unions now want an urgent response from the employers a new agreement signed before the summer break.

Unions representing workers across municipalities and regions are negotiating with the SKR and Sobona employer organisations on changes to the crisis agreement. The aim is to ensure that the agreement is better adapted to longer crisis situations, based on experience from the pandemic. The crisis agreement can be activated temporarily by the employers in special crisis situations and means that regular working hours are increased at the same time as staff receive higher compensation. The STAL and STML trade unions organized a demonstration outside the interior ministry on 7 August in protest at planned changes to the employment conditions of firefighters. The unions argue that the government wants to make changes to the pay and career paths of firefighters along with changes to working time. The unions are demanding that the government comply with the constitutional right of these workers to a process of consultation over the proposed changes. Read more at > STAL (PT)
EPSU has written a letter of protest to the Portuguese government for its failure to negotiate properly over proposed changes to workers' rights and pay and conditions in public administration. As part of its long-running campaign against government policies the FNFSP public sector trade union federation has organised a demonstration on 18 October taking advantage of the presence in Lisbon of government leaders from the rest of the European Union.
